As a prisoner myself, I can tell you firsthand the importance of mail, the importance of maintaining contact with the outside world, the importance of a social network.  Mail call is the highlight of our day, unless of course you receive no mail.  I can also tell you firsthand that there are some amazingly talented and creative and intelligent and personable people in prison and few bring to mind the stereo typical prisoner.  Most are simply here because they made bad choices, took the wrong fork in the road, or suffered from addictions, or were victims of circumstance or victims of their own making.  Few, however, are beyond redemption, and in some cases are actually innocent for the crimes for which they were accused and incarcerated.
